State Representative John Patrick Carney (D-Columbus) serves the communities of Clintonville, Northland and northern Columbus and is serving his third term in the Ohio House of Representatives.

While earning both his bachelor’s and law degree from The Ohio State University, Representative Carney was twice elected student government president. While holding that position he brokered an agreement with the Central Ohio Transit Authority to start a citywide busing program for all OSU students.

Representative Carney is the eleventh of twelve children, and his family has helped shape his beliefs in the importance of education, health care and economic opportunity. In the general assembly, Representative Carney will work to better leverage resources already at Ohio’s disposal, in order to expand workforce development and stimulate businesses. He will also pursue policies that lower health care costs and improve health by focusing on preventive care.

He serves as the ranking member of the Insurance Committee, and sits on the Finance Committee, Transportation Subcommittee of Finance, and Health and Aging Committee. He also serves as an appointee to the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review (JCARR) and the Joint Legislative Committee on Medicaid Technology and Reform.

Legislative highlights include the Healthy Choices for Healthy Children Act which aims to address the epidemic of childhood obesity in Ohio. Representative Carney also voted to limit college tuition hikes to help keep college affordable for middle class families.

He now works as an attorney in the Columbus office of Porter, Wright, Morris and Arthur LLP, where he counsels clients on health care issues.  Representative Carney is married to Jennifer Nelson Carney, an attorney at Bricker & Eckler LLP. They have two daughters, Clara and Maggie.
